Signs Of A Failing Water Pump

Water pumps generally fail for one of four reasons: A bad seal, a loose drive pulley, a bad or broken belt, or corrosion. A water pump generally lasts 60,000 to 90,000 mile and are often replaced during the timing belt replacement. If you’re experiencing any of the following give us a call for a quick repair estimate:

9

Leaking Coolant

Coolant leaking from the front and center part of the engine is most often due to a failed water pump.
9

Rust & Corrosion

All water pumps will fail eventually. As water pumps fail, rust or corrosion is a common reason why. Plan on replacing your water pump every 60K-90K miles.
9

Whining Noises

When the water pump assembly bearings loosen, the pulley belt begins to whine, screech and buzz.

9

Engine Overheating

When the water pump fails, coolant isn’t circulating properly through the engine, which causes it to overheat.
9

Steam From Radiator

Steam coming from under the hood is never a good sign. Pull over. Turn off the vehicle and let your engine cool down before more damage is done.

FAQs

What does the water pump do?

The water pump is an essential part of your vehicles cooling system that works hard to help maintain your engines temperature and prevent it from overheating. The water pump uses centrifugal force to keep the coolant moving through the engine, radiator, and hoses while your engine is running. The coolant fluid then absorbs the heat that is created from the combustion process and then dissipates the heat as it passes through the radiator. The water pump then creates suction to pull the coolant back in, and this cycle continues to repeat over and over. The water pump is most commonly located at the front of your engine and is typically driven by either the timing or serpentine belt.

Signs of a bad water pump

If your vehicle’s water pump is not functioning as it should, a range of problems may arise.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s crucial to get the problem inspected without delay to prevent further complications.
