What does the water pump do?

The water pump is an essential part of your vehicles cooling system that works hard to help maintain your engines temperature and prevent it from overheating. The water pump uses centrifugal force to keep the coolant moving through the engine, radiator, and hoses while your engine is running. The coolant fluid then absorbs the heat that is created from the combustion process and then dissipates the heat as it passes through the radiator. The water pump then creates suction to pull the coolant back in, and this cycle continues to repeat over and over. The water pump is most commonly located at the front of your engine and is typically driven by either the timing or serpentine belt.

Signs of a bad water pump

If your vehicle’s water pump is not functioning as it should, a range of problems may arise.

The most common sign of a bad water pump is an overheated engine. Overheating can lead to serious problems as an engine’s temperature will go beyond 100 C.
The other symptom of a bad water pump is coolant leakage. If your water pump is leaking coolant, you will see a puddle of green-colored sweet-smelling liquid under the hood.
Failure of the heater is another symptom that might occur in the cabin. That is a bad sign for you to continue driving, especially in the cold season. If you turn on the heater and still feel the cold air, this is a possible sign that your water pump is not working properly. It is another common sign of a bad water pump in a vehicle.
A growling sound indicates your vehicle might have a problem with its water pump. It can be an indication of a damaged or worn-out water pump, especially when the noise gets louder with an increase in engine speed.

Can you drive with a bad water pump?

Yes, you can drive with a bad water pump but it is not recommended to do that. It is important to note that the water pump is used to control the engine temperature. When your water pump is damaged or broken, you can be easily susceptible to overheating. That will lead to more expensive engine damages such as warped heads, blown head gasket, and cracked cylinders. In other words, the best thing to do when your water pump has an issue is to repair or replace it before you drive your car further. In this way, you will be not only safe but also prevent further and expensive engine repair in the future.
